The Integrative Expert: Moral, Epistemic, and Poietic Virtues in Transformation Research

Over the past 50 years, policy makers have sought to shape new and emerging technologies in light of societal risks, public values, ethical concerns. While much this work has taken place during “upstream” research prioritization “downstream” technology regulation, actual “midstream” engineers other technical experts increasingly been seen as a site for governing society. This trend towards “socio-technical integration” is reflected various governance frameworks such Sustainable Development (SD), Technology Assessment (TA), Responsible Innovation (RI) that are at center transformation research. Discussions around SD, TA, RI often focus on meso- macro-level processes dynamics, with less attention paid qualities individuals needed support processes. We seek highlight importance micro-level practices by drawing virtues experts.
